How We Can Install the Chosen Pine Planks
1. Pre-Inspection Towards the Panels
The installation of tongue and groove pine couldn’t, or rather shouldn’t be started without giving them pre-inspection beforehand. First, you need to make sure that the planks/panels meet the proper quality. It has to be as you requested. Second, you have to check if you have the right amount prepared. Third, you will need to verify the color as well. It might seem trivial things, but you can’t expect the installation to be done without a hitch if you ignore doing such simple inspection.
2. Knowing the Panels’ Characteristics
You might have seen home exterior with wood planks or panels seen on the walls. However, you need to know that not all of them can be used for exterior needs. Tongue and groove panels from Ready Pine for example, are one that is strictly mean for interior only. Even when they are used inside the building, you need to know that the time could slightly alter their color. This is how pine panels are normally, so there is nothing to blame of it. You don’t need to protest the manufacturer.
3. Pine Panels/Planks Acclimatization
Surely, you understand that each home has its own humidity level. Unfortunately, pine is the kind of wood that can react to it. Depending on the humidity level, the pine might either expand or contract. Just let the planks of tongue and groove pine in the room for up to 10 days to get accustomed to it. If you don’t do this, the expansion or contraction might happen once installed. You will then see the gaps, especially in the seams and lifting of the pine boards. So, think this through.
4. Proper Gear for Doing Installation
Whenever we have building stuff to do, you know it will often be middle to high scale project. When it comes to that, we want you to know that we will be dealing with things that could harm us. That is why it is important to wear safety gear during tongue and grove paneling. The gear that you should wear must be at least safety glasses, dust mask, and gloves. For interior work, these gears are enough to protect you. Sure, it won’t hurt to add helmet and earphone to give you more protection.
5. Nailing Planks Before the Installation
Next, we will have to work on the installation. The nails you will need to use for tongue and groove pine are 1 ½” to 2” finish nails. They are about the nails that are about 16 or 18ga. Here, what you have to do is to nail into the tongue at specific angle that is at 45 degree. Make sure that the nails are hidden when you have the adjacent board installed. One nail has to be in each stud or the joist. Once you are done with that, you can finally go to the main installation of this pine paneling here.
6. Installation of the Pine Paneling
To get the installation started, you need to get your planks ready near you and work things on right from the bottom. So, fasten the first panel at least ¼” above the floor and ¼” from the wall. Then, you need to face the nail right into the 2×4 base plate. Cover it by baseboard and nail into tongue. Once you reach the row end, this tongue and groove way has you to measure the space you have left. Allow another ¼” for expansion. Then, take off cut from the last plank and start the next one.
7. Cleaning to Finish the Installation
Now that you are done with the previous step, it is the time for you to do some cleaning. We must have messed here and there to get the job done. So that it can finally be used as new looking living space, we need to clean it up. In order to clean tongue and groove pine, you just need to use water and mild detergent. Make your towel damp with this very mixture and use it to wipe dry the panels. Then, you have successfully done with everything. We are sure you will like your new, warm home.
